Whenever I see Dagny, my brain always misreads it as "dang." That makes me not like it very much. Also, I don't really like the sound of it.

I like Dagny a lot. A couple of other users referred to "dag" being slang for poop. Personally, slang would probably not prohibit me from using or liking a name. (Example: Richard has a particular nickname that is associated with slang, as does William but both of those names seem fine and reasonable choices to me.) I like the meaning of this name as well as the sound. The name itself sounds slightly masculine with a feminine ending. I also like the literary association.

I'm a fan of Old Norse/Scandinavian names, and Dagny is one of my favourites. It sounds spunky, sturdy, and in my opinion, a breath of fresh air. It's not at all a common name where I'm from, so I would've never guessed it to be considered old-fashioned in it's country of origin. (Though, perhaps that is beside the point -- I've always been drawn to the older names anyhow!) I don't think it's too unusual to use in an English-speaking country.

It's not really my style. Sorry.

I like Dagny. It's simultaneously offbeat and pretty. I prefer it to Daphne by far. The "daph" part and the fact that it's close to the word "daft" keep me from liking Daphne more than I do. Anyways, I'd rather encounter Dagny than Daphne.Combos:

Well, I like it, but it's not a favourite. There are worse names out there.

Lauren said that a dag is a word for a bit of crusty sheep poo that gets stuck to a sheeps bottom in new zealand slang. Also it's really Rand-ish.So not my fave. I might edit in combos later if I think of them.

The slang is the same in Australia too. Dag literally means dried poop stuck to a sheep's bottom but we also use it as a not so serious insult. Kind of like "You're such a dag" to describe someone being silly or stupid. It isn't something you'd call someone behind their back though, it is more something you use to people who have a good relationship with. I never realized until this post that it was an Australian/NZ slang term. I was always so puzzled why Dagmar and Dagny get any love at all.

What I don't understand is that when people from this board fall for a Swedish/Scandinavian name, they choose the most dated name on the list! :P
I dislike Dagny. It is very dated, and I really dislike the sound of it too. And I usually dislike word names, and since Dagny consist of two Swedish word I dislike the name even more. Sorry :P

I actually try not to pick names like Dagny for that very reason. Granted I do like a few old-time Swedish names that are no longer popular, though. A lot of the English-speaking users are probably not used to hearing names like Dagny on any age group.I can understand how you feel. I am also guilty of liking dated Italian names as well, such as Carmela, Salvatore, and Filomena. But I realize that some Italians may find them old-fashioned or even ridiculous.

Well, it's because we wouldn't know what's considered dated in another country...but I'm sure you already knew that. :)

Yeah, names like that don't sound dated to us because we don't know any. I love the name Sven, and a lot of the German and Slavic names I like are dated too (my favorite girls' name is considered middle-aged!). When I fall for a Scandinavian name, I like to check out its popularity - most of my favorites peaked in the 30s-50s. :PBut yeah, getting back to Ozma's point, for example, I had no idea Torbjorn was dated until someone told me (I think it was Caprice?) - the first one I'd ever heard of is in his 20s, and he's an exception.

"Å-å-åh Dagny, fem droppar till ..."It doesn't bother me that it's a word name, but I agree with the rest. And it reminds me of the silly 50s song quoted in the subject ...

Hmm, Dag is a cool nickname, but it feels sort of like a tongue twister. I at first thought it sounded like a male name, so that's something I don't like, but overall it;s kinda cool. Dagny Calista
Dagny Brooklyn
Dagny Blair
Dagny Gabrielle
Dagny Marissa
Dagny Grace
Dagny Dominique
Dagny Gwendolyn
Dagny Olivia
