Elvis
in reply to a message by Orsino
No, Elvis is after THE Elvis. For some reason Muslims in this area like to use international names, especially ones similar to names in use or ending in familiar syllables. Names like Elvis, Adis and Haris were popular in my generation, and today it's Daris or Enis for example.

Interesting
I find it kind of funny that they don't at all mind to use Elvis, who I'd imagine most people there would immediately associate with Elvis Presley. Here I've never heard of an Elvis because there is only one Elvis! People would avoid a name with such a strong association for the most part.

Well, the usage started when Elvis Presley was popular and it was probably considered a good namesake (and since he's not from here, it was not a problem).
Now the name is so common that it's lost it's original association. Everyone knows at least one Elvis in real life (for example I went to primary school with one, and there's a famous actor, a singer and and a few TV reporters/presenters named Elvis, etc.).

The only other Elvis I've heard of in real life is the organist at my parents' church. So there is a musical connection to their lives I suppose! I know he's African (but not sure what country). I guess his parents were big fans.
How sad.
That's mighty stupid of them. I thought it was frowned upon for Muslims (including white ones, not just ugly dark-skinned Arabs and Somalis) to use names that are used in Christian countries. Can you imagine a Muslim named Christopher?
I also thought that Enis came from Turkish?

I would say that this post was made with little regard for Rule #1 ...
1. Hateful, malicious or harassing messages and spam are not allowed.
Please, remember and consider this rule when you post. Opinions about names are the topic here. It isn't really appropriate to post sweeping judgmental statements like these - saying what names are inappropriate or "stupid" for religious groups you're not a member of, or saying that you think someone's skin color is "ugly." Surely you're aware that this kind of thing may easily and reasonably be interpreted as hateful or malicious.

?
not just ugly dark-skinned Arabs and Somalis
I'm hoping you meant something else by that ?
I don't think I've ever read any comment that disturbing on here before. I'm actually pretty shocked that someone would say something like that, but I guess I shouldn't be...

Orsino has made some pretty stupid comments before but I think that's one of the most insulting and disgusting I've ever read on BtN by anybody. No excuse for that at all.
Just ignore him, he tries to get a rise out of people sometimes.
