You know, I like it. It seems quite dated, but I've made myself imagine it on some prairie girl in the 1800s, and then it's quite nice.
I really dislike Mandy too, but don't think it's a problem. I've known tons of Amandas, but don't think I've known any who went by Mandy. It's definitely not one of those nicknames that will be assumed, at least.
I could never say how many Amandas I've known. I was born in 1985, it was like the most popular name ever. I also have a cousin and a cousin in-law named Amanda. My cousin actually I think gets called Andi at home.
