I have no use for Margaret at all. It feels so stuffy and frumpy to me.
Miriam, on the other hand, I love. Old, but new (or at least not overused) with the adroable Miri as a nickname option. Mim is cute too though.

If you have a niece named Mira then I think Miriam is out altogher. Unless you niece lives miles away and you never see her.
