Abigail
WDYT? Too popular? Too stern, and somber? Too anything , or is it a lovely, tried-and-true classic? Oh, and what is your opinion of the NN Abby?
Thanks a bunch. :)

I don't dislike it, but I don't love it, either. It's only on my PNL because I'm using it as the name for a character. I don't mind Abby, but I think the full name is better (then again, I tend to like slightly more formal names).
Other than that, it makes me think of Abigail Adams, and I've recently started to be very interested in learning more about her (I like/admire what I do know about her).

I love Abigail! It reminds me of Colonial America. It's so hearty sounding and Abby is a sweet nickname. It's too popular for me to use, though.
I like it. Abby is a bit meh to me, I prefer Gail.
I don't care for any version of Gail (in fact Gail is one of my least favorite names), so I don't like Abigail. Abby is ok, but I think I would prefer it on a spaniel.

I dislike it immensely! The distinct BIG sound, is terribly unattractive. I don't like Abby as a nn, either.
I used to hate this name before I knew the meaning. Now I would use it because I love the meaning. I think it is too popular but I rarely hear Abigail. They're all Abbys, which I think is annoying and whiny. I feel sad when I hear, "We named her Abby. Just Abby. It's not short for anything."
It's gloomy and makes me think of British people. I have nothing against British people but the name Abigail makes me think of the British.
I like it; it seems feminine, strong, and a little historical and it has the young sounding Abby and the older, wiser Gail in it to make a nice balance. The full name Abigail reminds me of birds for some reason. I wouldn't use it because it's pretty common, and I don't squee when people name their kids this, but I do like it.
I like Abbey. Abby is too boring IMO :P I also like Gail and maybe Abi.

Too popular, too weak, too mousy. I just can't get myself to like anything about it. The nn Abby is okay though.
Well we choose Abigail for our daughter so of course I like it :)
It is popular but to me if I love a name, the popularity doesn't matter. I don't find it stern or somber at all! I like it because I find it sweet, soft, lilting.
I much prefer Abigail to Abby but it is a very convienent nickname. We call our daughter both.

Abigail, Abigail, Abigail. The more I say it the more I dislike the -gail. But I strongly dislike Gail to begin with, so that's not surprising. I have always like Abby as a nickname. Cute, fun, and spunky.
Also, yes far far far too popular for me to ever get super excited about.
As I like Abby, I've come across some alternative full names for it, which I think are far superior to Abigail:
Abena
Abia(h)
Abijah

Oh, and...
...I wonder if Abby could work as a NN for Alba? I've always liked Alba, but the -gail in Abigail leaves me cold.

I think it could. And Alba is cute, for the record!
You know what, I used to hate this name, but now I am coming around to it. I don't know if I'd ever use it, but there is something silvery-lilac, ethereal and gentle about Abigail. I know it's apparently considered a "servant" name but I don't see it that way at all. It seems very classy, proper, and almost chilly-aloof.
I will say I do not like Abby, not sure why. Maybe because it's a popular dog name around here. I would like to see an Abigail that goes by Gail one day, that woud be fun.
