Tamara
Tamara has been on my PNL for a while. I think the name is lovely. I also like Tamar, the original form. However, I don't care for the nickname Tammy. What do you think of Tamara?

I agree with everything you said.I love Tamara (it's also on my pnl) and I like Tamar. Tammy is okay... but I wouldn't want it as a nn for my daughter if I named her Tamara.

I like tah-MAH-rah better than tə-MAHR-ə. It is an ok name. I think it depends on the person who has it-it can go either elegant or trashy imo.

I think of the TV show 'Sister Sister' when I hear this name. That's not a bad thing for me, just something I notice first thing. NN Tammy is okay, but I tend to associate it with baby boomers, so it's hard to imagine a young girl being called Tammy for me.Tamar looks kind of masculine to me though, not obviously masculine like Elliot or James, abotu as masculine as something more unisex like Rory.

I like Tamar better than Tamara.

The one I knew (way back in elementary school) was too stuck-up and popular for my liking, so the association's not-so-great. She was a ta-MARE-uh, so that's the pronunciation I'm familiar with. ta-MAIR-uh sounds even snootier to me. And Tamar sounds really harsh and gutteral. And isn't there an unfortunate Bible story about Tamar. Or maybe I'm confusing her with someone else...
In any case, not much positive to say on this front. Sorry.

I love Tamar! Tamara is good too.
I like Tamara because you can get "Mara" instead of "Tammy", and I also like it because it reminds me of Tamora (as in Tamora Pierce). However, it seems to modern next to Tamar that I can't help liking Tamar better.

I'm with you in that I'm not into Tammy but I sure like Tamara (pr. tah-MAR-uh, not tah-MARE-uh). That's my main problem with the name. It (or rather Tammy) is dated and everyone seems to want to pronounce it differently. Re: Tamar, I want to like it, but I don't care for the stress on the 'mar' part.I'm interested to see what everyone thinks since I think it's an awesome name.

It reminds me of "Superfudge" by Judy Blume (Peter and Fudge's baby sister was named Tamara, NN Tootsie). It's nice enough, but I wouldn't use it myself.

(laughs)I remember that book. It was hilarious!

It's alright. I'm conflicted about it since I have an adorable little cousin named Tamara and also an ex-best friend named Tamara. I think I like Tamar better. What about the NN Tee or Mar or Mara?

I feel EXACTLY the same way. I would most likely use Tamar as a MN because, while I love Tamara, I so dislike Tammy, I don't think I could or would ever use it.
It's such a shame too. Tamara is very lovely. I think the reason I dislike Tammy so much is because I have never met one that I like (except here on BTN!) and because it is not nearly as beautiful as Tamara or Tamar...

I"m not really a fan mostly because I knew a girl named Tamara and we didn't always get along. Instead of Tammy what about Mara for a nn?
