I like it very much! I adore people who use surnames for thier children as a way to honor! Beside the fact that John Coltrane is a great person to honor!!! :-) Using John would have been too plain and not definitively enough the honoree's.

My first thought was the article "10 Ways to Avoid Hipster Baby Names" #1 on the list is "DON’T NAME YOUR BABY AFTER A JAZZ MUSICIAN."

Just one of those names that sounds like parents trying far too hard to give their kid a 'cool' name. If you want to honor John Coltrane (as I believe the name of the character in Mr Holland's Opus is named after" why not use John rather than Coltrane.

I think it's completely awesome.

It's alright. Did he go by Colt?

It's too surnamey for me to like it as a first name.
