I can't say that I'd fancy it as a first name on a real boy, because of the possibility of Shirley. But added to a solid-but-dull first name, it would be great fun. James Sherlock Lastname, William Sherlock Lastname, Thomas Sherlock Lastname: all looking good to me.

I've always rather enjoyed the notion of two bloodhounds (or bassets, actually, depending on one's dogfood budget) named Sherlock and Mycroft. I agree, the mn slot is safer for humans, and I see no reason at all not to use it. William Sherlock; Will Sherlock; aha, got it! Robin Hood's merry man, Will Scarlet. Not an association everyone might have ... and it does flow well.
