Laverne...
I don't know... it's just been on my mind lately. What do you think of Laverne? What sort of impression does it create for you? Care to share any combos?
Thanks!

For me, it creates the impression of a loud, bossy woman who wears tacky clothing and chews gum constantly, and has brightly colored horned rim glasses and dangling earrings, and brightly colored high heel shoes and really tight pants.
This is in spite of the fact that the only Laverne I ever knew was nothing at all like that. She was my teenage best friend's mother. A well-spoken, well-dressed woman who could sing and play the piano and who was the musical director of all of our community theater group's musicals. Didn't change my impression of the name. Go figure. I still find it a tacky name.

I always thought it was kind of funny that there was both a Laverne (my best friend and maid-of-honor's mother) and a Shirley (my brother's girlfriend and later wife) at my wedding.
THAT'S PRETTY FUNNY!

I like it. It's got personality; I can't imagine a boring Laverne. And while it has quite a girly, delicate sound, the retro feel of it also conjures up a tough old broad with a heart of gold, so it's simultaneously feisty and girly. I'd automatically stick it with something like Francine or Gloria, but it would work just as well with, say, Daisy or Eleanor.
It was my great-uncle's name so all I can think of is him
Boogie, woogie, bugle boy of company D
Patty, Maxine and Laverne were the Andrews Sisters, of WWII singing fame. Most people proabably wouldn't remember them. I'm showing my age.
More people would remember "Laverne and Shirley," a 1970's sitcom. But even then I don't think it would register with a dd's age group.
While I prefer quirky Laverna, I like Laverne's gentle qualities as well. It reminds me of Lenore that way. Names with a "v" sound in them are hot right now. I'd love to meet a little Laverne. :-)
Laverne Holly
Laverne Meadow
Laverne Adele
Laverne Carole
Laverne Isidora
Laverne Patricia
Laverne Eirlys
Laverne Maura
Laverne Alice
Laverne Iona
Laverne Isobel

you know what's even better than Laverne
Laverna. Know why? It's got old-lady pizazz AND! AND! She's the Roman goddess of thieves. Thieves!! How much cooler can you get! She's like a crazy old bat who stuffs things in her purse and absconds with them! And I bet that purse is fake croc-skin.
But I like Laverne as well. It makes me think of sitting in a screened-in porch with green pressing up all around, and wood and slow summer warmth and sagging old orange chesterfields and drinking out of jam jars and chipped pottery mugs.

that sounds like a scene out of "Steel Magnolias"!
Laverna
I like this so very much that I'm going to have to work it into my book somehow. Roman goddess of thieves! Utterly awesome.

I find it horribly dated. I don't think the sound of it is pleasant either. I just really don't like it. :/
