I like Magnolia well enough even though it's not something I'd probably use. It feels heavy and light, old-fashioned yet modern all at the same time.

Magnolia Charlotte
Magnolia Clare

Magnolia Esther -- uncommonly pretty
Magnolia Eve -- love this

I really want to love it because it's pretty and I prefer it to Margaret to use the nickname Maggie, but it doesn't quite strike me as "name-y" enough somehow. Weird because generally that's not a problem for me with words as names. Anyways, I like:
Magnolia Cecily

It is just way too Southern to me. It reeks of Southern. Meaning no offense to any Southerners---it's great being a Southerner if you're a Southerner, but I'm not a Southerner, despite living for fourteen years in the South, so Magnolia is not a name I'd ever consider using.
That, and it's sort of sickly-sweet.
That, and it's sort of sickly-sweet.
Regarding Magnolia's Southern charm:
I agree with queenv, that it is VERY Southern. In fact it's on my middle name list for that very reason!
As the official tree of Mississippi, and the official flower of Louisiana, its blossom is, to me a symbol of Southern grace and charm. I live in Texas, have roots in Mississippi, Louisiana, and almost every other southern state, so I think it really fits me and my family.
Wordsmith, I see that you live in New York. I think if I ran into a Magnolia in New York, I would think it was a bit odd. I'm not saying you shouldn't use it. I'm just trying to give you an inside view of what others may be thinking when you announce the name.
Edited to change the title of the post.
