So, I was in my English Literature class today, and we're studying the Romantic poets, one of whom was Shelley. And it occurred to me all of a sudden that I actually quite like the name. I mean, what with its literary connections (Mary Shelley and the poet Percy Shelley) and its relative uncommonness, I actually think it's quite a good name. But... I'm not sold on it.
So, you know the drill, persuade or dissuade me, people, and feel free to offer combos!

I like the literary connection, but when it's a first name, that connection doesn't automatically come to mind. I think of the name Shelly first, which is okay, but I don't think that it's quite ready for revival just yet. Michelle "Shelly" is common among people my age, so it doesn't strike me as all that interesting.

I like Shelley. I think it's cute. Really cute. One of the cutest names ever.

I like the name Shelley for the same reasons, for it's literary connections. But it has an aura of blandness to me - it's faded and tired for some reason, though I've only known one Shelly. I like it too though. Let's try to pep it up!
hmmm Shelley... poetic Shelley.... as a first name it might be hard. I have this image of a blonde ponytailed beach bunny in my head. Not very poetic!

These are not working for me....
On the other hand I like how bright, open and honest a Shelley seems. It has a bit of hipster appeal. I think of mix tapes and jean jackets and bubble gum and bright red telephones. It's energetic and snappy.

It's very 70s, imo. I appreciate the reference, I do love Frankenstein, but I don't like the name.

I was at school with a Shelley whose ln was Arnold - very poetic. She grew up to be an English teacher. And I knew another Shelley whose given name was Michelle. So there are precedents and possibilities.

I'm a fan of both the Shelleys. I quite like the name, too, but only for a boy. In fact, I like it most as a boy's MN.
I think Jasper Shelley and Edmund Shelley are nice combos.
Though they're probably too effete and dandy-esque for the average consumer, a little part of me likes Vivian Shelley and Dorian Shelley, too.
