maybe that would appeal to him. I think it is too old fashioned but so are a lot of names used these days.

I love that movie.

i mean older names are coming back so i dont see the problem with. i dont like the name but it would be refreshing indeed. i much prefer its nickname Hattie :)
I like it a lot, and don't think it's old-fashioned at all, just classic - but it's been in the top 100 here for at least 10 years, so maybe we're just more used to it.
I might have been a Harriet myself if my cousin hadn't beaten me to it, drat her. She's always Harriet (and very occasionally Hazza) but she has a little namesake who's 4, and called Etty most of the time. Maybe if you wave the option of Etty or Etta or Hatty at him it'll sound more modern. Or maybe get him to watch Harriet the Spy, if he might find little nerdy girls cute.

I like Harriet. I think it is a lovely, classic name. Maybe she could try and convert him by agreeing to pair it with a more modern name?
I don't mind Harriet. I like Hattie and Henrietta more, but I admire Harriet's stalwart charms.
You could try telling him that names like Harriet are gonna be huuuuge one day - like the next Isabella! Also it is a very respectable name - nobody thinks a Harriet is dumb. Harriet is smart, chic, and sleek.

I don't really like it, but not because it's "too old-fashioned." I don't agree with the husband there. Harriet is a name that has been so unpopular for so long that it has retro charm, and may be due for a comeback, along the lines of Mabel and Hazel. "Too old-fashioned" are the names that were popular in the post WWII era, such as Linda, Susan, Patricia, Donna, Barbara, and the like.
However, I still don't like the name and would never consider using it, so I hope hubby wins out in this case.

No idea on how to convert him because I agree. If someone told me they were considering Harriet, I would think "Why?".
Hattie is a cute nickname but it is really old fashioned & dowdy unattractive librarian.
I was actually talking about this with DH over the weekend bc on whatever tv show he was watching Harriet's sister was talking about Harriet stole all her boyfriends, and I couldn't imagine a Harriet stealing or seducing anyone.

I agree with her husband...
...it's too old-fashioned, and UGLY.
Sorry, but I don't think she should try to convert him. The name reminds me of an old, fat woman with hairy legs.

I like it and would be very happy to see it, but if I was actually naming a child I'd probably think it was too old-fashioned. Either use it as a middle name or come up with a neat nn (Harah? Hari? Ette? idk)..
I think it's wonderful! Perhaps she could work on his affection for, say, 60s music or 30s movies or chicken a la king or whatever, teach him to think of the old and the glorious as retro chic rather than dusty-attic-junk, and build on that?
I've been circling Harriet Daisy for quite some time. But perhaps if she let him choose the mn he might settle for that. And if he's going to actually be present at the birth, he'll very likely be putty in her hands for long enough afterwards for her to establish Harriet very firmly as the perfect name.
