I think it's fine and would be fun. I think of Spike Jonze and Spike Lee - admittedly, their real names are Adam and Shelton, but then it's not going to be the baby's first name. And I would a thousand times rather be called Spike than Cash, which, like you say, has horribly materialistic overtones.
Also - I just checked out of curiosity, and 438 people in the UK were given the first name Spike between 1984 and 2005. I was quite surprised!
