This is a dated name that I've always liked. It has a medieval feel to it. I wouldn't use a nickname for it.

But I knew a Layne who was just Layne, and I always thought that the name worked (because I thought it did) because it sounds like a nickname for Elaine.

Dated and dusty and likely to grow up stout and work behind the counter in a dry-cleaner's. And Laney really does not appeal at all.

I like Elaine and I think the nickname Lainey is cute. A lot of people seem to feel that Elaine is very old-fashioned or out-dated sounding still, but I think it's very nice.

I prefer Elaina but I do like Elaine. Lainey would be my spelling of choice for a nn. Please don't use El, Elle, Ella, Ellie, ect for a nn, though. All of the El- nns are terribly overused IMO.

I've always liked Elaine. Very classy.

I really like Elaine -- it's effortlessly elegant.

I love the name Elaine! I actually have a friend named Elain too. How about El for a nickname? Or Laine? The 'y' and 'ie' endings in nicknames never really appealed to me.
