This is a dated name that I've always liked. It has a medieval feel to it. I wouldn't use a nickname for it.
But I knew a Layne who was just Layne, and I always thought that the name worked (because I thought it did) because it sounds like a nickname for Elaine.

Dated and dusty and likely to grow up stout and work behind the counter in a dry-cleaner's. And Laney really does not appeal at all.
I really like Elaine -- it's effortlessly elegant.
