Barnaby?
Just watched Dorian Gray and saw in the credits there was someone named Barnaby. Any other day I'd say I disliked it, but you know how it is when even against your better judgement you find yourself liking a name.
I mean, I've always laughed at this name before and today, I cocked my head sideways a bit and actually considered it. Hmmm..
So.. pros and cons and thoughts on Barnaby?

Oh, I adore Barnaby! I love that it combines jollity and staidness.
Hehehe...this is one I want to like and go back and forth on. I do that with Balthasar/Baltazar too. I could definitely see naming a parrot Baltazar. But back to Barnaby...the circus always comes to mind. I know it's Barnum & Bailey, but I guess the sound is so close for me that the circus is always in town with Barnaby.
Adore it, I think is adorably sweet.
I like it, I think it's great fun! I can see a Barnaby always smiling and laughing and having the most amusing sense of humor.

Character? Do you know the "Dark Is Rising" books - five of them! - by Susan Cooper? One was made into a total non-event of a movie a few years ago, but the books are good and contain a Barney.

Barney isn't good, but I rather think it's inevitable. I don't object to dinosaurs - just names! And either Barnaby or even Barnabas is interesting and edgy in itself, with a faint air of the Dickensian about it, or Victorian bankers.
I'd be more likely to use it than Dorian, mostly because Dorianne is a familiar compound here: I know two who were both Dorothea/Dorothy plus Anna/Ann so that's not even ambiguous. But for practical reasons (and a barney is a bar-room brawl!) I'd keep it in the mn position.

I like the associations. But I love Dorian too.
Babes in Toyland
First image that comes to mind is the dodgy character in "Babes in Toyland". Barnaby was not a pleasant character... and children are more likely to see a Christmas special for kids to form an oppinion on a name than a more grown-up movie.
nn Barney
wouldn't make my list by a mile... just nms.

I think of Babes in Toyland too. One of my favorite movies!
Well I doubt many children are watching Babes in Toyland anymore, but if it makes you feel any better that's what I used to think of too.
Also, maybe I should have said what do you think of it in theory and not on an actual child somewhere. I'm mostly thinking of using it for a character, not a real child.

I don't like it in theory either... and it sounds too cartoon characterish. For a character, it could work though.
As for the movie, it frequently finds its way into the long list of yearly Xmas specials along with "Rudolph", "Charlie Brown's Christmas" (or whatever it's called), "Sound of Music" (still not sure why it's a Xmas special), "Frosty", "It's a Wonderful Life", etc. as an old standard.

LOVE IT!!
Absolutely love it! Our guinea piggy is named Barnaby and I adore it and would use it on a real child :) It partially stemmed from a childhood hero named Bernard "Barney" and I always kinda liked Barney :) I also love Barnabas
