I'm really liking the Jethro today. What do you think?

It's too bad, Jethro is kinda of cool. I think it might be workable now, though - most of the cultural baggage around it is quite old and will die out soon.

Yes, I know about all that. I think it adds to its allure actually--gives it a bit of whimsy. Better than some stupid ass vampire or some sparkly merman.
I like it but...
...it's too rock and roll for me. I see it as very far removed from its Old-Testament/Puritan/down-to-earth roots. It's totally interchangeable with the name Axel or Jagger or Cruz. It oozes motorcycle. I think its cool. I'd for sure think any Jethro's parents were old-school rockers, no matter what Jethro himself looked like. I do not see it as hillbilly in any way, shape or form.

Hmmm. I am so un-rock and roll that I don't have that association personally. I could easily see a classical musician with the name.
I am glad you do not see it as hillbilly, because I do not either. In fact, I was in Tenleytown (in DC) the other day which is a very affluent area, and there was a dad in Chipotle who was calling to his little toddler, calling out the name Jethro. It was a golden moment for namenerds everywhere.

I really like Jethro! It has the easy to use nickname Jett as well so if he didn't like Jethro he could go by that! Jethro Hawthorne would be a cool name.
Jett
I agree, Jethro nn Jett is really, really good. :)

Jett sounds ultra-preppy though... nms at all.
My policy is not to read other responses to a post before I make my own, lest I be influenced by others' opinions. I'm making no exception for this one, but I would be very surprised if at least one other person didn't say that this name has too much of a hillbilly image, an opinion with which I would concur.
Now I'll see if, contrary to my expectations, I'm alone in this view.

I also really like Jethro!
I can't hear Jethro without thinking of Jethro Tull.
I associate it with Jethro Gibbs from NCIS, so all positive for me.

Ditto!
I have strong, positive associations with Jethro from NCIS as well, though I admit that I've liked the name since I read it in a book as a kid.
It's a bit hillbilly, but I think it's still usable as a mn.

It makes me think of "The Beverly Hillbillies." I'm not a fan.
Meaningwise it's good and it sounds ok, but I think that a lrg. portion of the 30+ age group of the North American public may have their main connection w/ the name connected w/ "The Beverly Hillbillies".
I'm an NCIS fan so my first though is "Gibbs!" A good association in my book but I'm not really sold on the name on it's own. Maybe it's still too tied to the Beverly Hillbillies?
