Is Jamie an acceptable nickname.....
for Benjamin?

Well....I hate Benjamin and I hate the nickname Ben. I don't hate Jamie, although I think it's too feminine sounding for a boy. But it's an improvement over Benjamin and Ben, so I will say sure, it's acceptable.
Kind of wonder, though, if one wants a Jamie, why one wouldn't just use James.

You could certainly use it, but it would cause issues. Benjamin is a very common name with very common nicknames. James is a very common name with very common nicknames. When you try to take one fairly common nickname for a common name and use it for another common name with common nicknames (follow that? :P)-- mass confusion for people. People will ask if his name is James, and when you say no, it's Benjamin, they'll wonder why he's not called Ben.
But I'm also bias because I was initially taken aback at the idea of using a nn that I love for James and would use in real life as a nn for my son's name.

Good in theory, alright in real life, I would say.
I think it's acceptable! I'm not picky with nicknames (whether or not they're super intuitive or not). I do think you'll have to remind people that you're calling him "Jamie" as a nickname, and not "Ben", but they'll catch on.
I know 2 just-Jamie's, a boy and a girl. And they're married. Very confusing! :P I personally don't like just Jamie, but then I don't like just nicknames in general. Plus if it's just Jamie there could be some gender confusion, because it's used on girls. I think Jamie would be a cute and quirky nn for Benjamin.
I know plenty of Jamies who are just Jamies, so I think it can stand on its own.
Excellent! That alleviates my concern greatly. :)
