Sybil / Sybille
My mom hates this name, which makes me love it even more. I'm totally diggin' this name because it's taboo and also because I've totally fallen in love with the saucy Renaissance portrait of Sybille of Cleves (Anne's sister) - check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Lucas_Cranach_d._%C3%84._040.jpgI like the look of Sybille but I bet I'd never say it right, so Sybil it is. What do you think of Sybil? You can make some combos for it if you like - I haven't quite got to that stage yet.

Oh you guysWait wait wait. What about Sybil Flora Cornelia. Cornelia was the name of multiple-personality "Sybil's" psychologist, and Flora was the name of the woman who wrote the Sybil book. It's like... the complete package. The whole journey in one name. It's also a super sad and beautifully confused name because there is all the controversy about whether or not Sybil was actually a multiple personality or if she was being manipulated by others in order to gain fame from her pain. Wowowow, so powerful. Yep, I love it, it's official.

Wai--t. Wha?You want to name a hypothetical child after a mentally ill woman, her psychiatrist and the woman who profited off of both of them? Yes! Psychotic mothers of the internet arise! You have nothing to lose but your guilt! I love you to pieces, you dark, disturbed namenerd, you. The fact that Sybil Flora Cornelia just happens to ring with clarity and delight is the cherry on top. :-D

LMAOAgh Bear I love you so much."You want to name a hypothetical child after a mentally ill woman, her psychiatrist and the woman who profited off of both of them?" is my new favourite quote. I'm going to give it a place of honour in my Facebook profile, along with "You're not a rebel, you're just over-tired" (compliments of my co-worker).

Oh my god. If Sibyl Minerva weren't awesome enough on its own, it's super-scat theme music pushed it right over the edge into FANTASTICTOWN.

I love Sybil and Sybilla. Sybil is just so goshdarned elegant, even though my main cultural associations with it are a witch (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Sybil_Leek) and Sybil in Fawlty Towers. Sybilla is so wonderfully medieval (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Sybilla_of_Normandy) and nice to say. I also have a bit of a thing for Sibylle, because I like Sibylle Baier. So hard to choose between them! but I'd probably go for Sybil, because less likely to get Billie as a nn.Sybille of Cleves has seriously flirty eyebrows. I think I love her too. Sybil Antonia / Antoinette
Sybil Edith / Editha
Sybil Edwina / Rowena
Sybil Easter
Sybil Loveday
Sybil Louisa / Letitia
Sybil Augusta
Sybil Isolda
Sybil Marion / Marianne / Marigold
Sybil Joan
Sybil Juanita
Sybil Gwendolen
Sybil Viola

The reason my mom hates it is because she thinks of a psycho woman with multiple personalities, like from the book/movie Sybil(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirley_Ardell_Mason) - GASP Sybil's real name was Shirley?! I need to tell my mom this. Maybe it will help her not hate Sybil so much. Anyways.I really love these!Sybil Antonia / Antoinette - gorgeous
Sybil Editha - Editha never looks more apropos.
Sybil Edwina / Rowena - heck yeah
Sybil Loveday - aww!
Sybil Louisa / Letitia - Sybil Letitia is WOW. Whattabout Sybil Laetitia?!
Sybil Augusta
Sybil Marion / Marianne / Marigold - love em all, naturally
Sybil Juanita - so cute
Sybil Gwendolen
Sybil Viola

Lovely combinations. Sybil Edith transports me to WWII Britain and sensible shoes chic. So romantic. Sybil Edwina and Sybil Rowena make me think of medieval times, as does Sybil Marion and Sybil Joan.Sybil Augusta makes me sit up straighter. She's a grande dame is ever there was one. :-)

I like Sybil, although not Sybille as much, but I adore Sybilla / Sibylla.

Sybil Diana
Sybil Dorothea
Sybil Edwina
Sybil Eudora (I love Eudora so much!)- I also love Eudora so much! I love it as a first name actually - how do you think Sybil and Eudora sound as sisters? ;)
Sybil Eugenie
Sybil Francoise
Sybil Georgina
Sybil Gwendolen

agree with WordsmithI prefer Sibyl too. I think Sibyl (or Sibylla in Greek) is the original spelling and I usually prefer those. Plus I think Sibyl looks more balanced than Sybil. I don't even know why but I don't like 'S' and 'y' so close together. That may just me being weird though ;)

Sibyl is the more authentic spelling. My guess is that the Sybil spelling came about because of confusion with Sylvia. I have no data on that. It took me a little getting used to because I used to spell it Sybil too. But it's not that difficult and I'm glad I did.The authenticity is the most important to me. But I also like Sibyl visually. The "y" at the end looks more at home. This is an odd turn of my mind, but the "y" looks heavier than the "i" and so seems to belong after it. I was so enchanted with the notion that you loved the name that I dind't even notice when I left my comments above.

"This spelling variation has existed since the Middle Ages."y'all I think it's okay by now.I prefer Sybil myself.

ah thank god for you I thought there was something wrong with me because I like Sybil just fine this way

but but but.....But I liked the idea of "Billie" as a secret family pet name via the bil in Sybil. Sad face.....I agree that Sibyl does look more natural. The Y does look more at home. But I can't write it properly! My handwriting obviously can't computer S-I-B with a capital S. Maybe I could call her lowercase-sibyl, a la bell hooks the feminist writer. I guess I need to practice my Sibyl cursives and teach myself to stop using Sybil.

I think Sibyl could still go by Billie ;)

I have an involuntary negative feeling about the name, but I don't know why. It must have something to do with media type-casting of the name. That said, it's unusual and I find it oddly fascinating. Enough that I could get over the gut first-association and really dig it. It would be cool if the name got another lease on life. The history behind it is awesome. That Cranach portrait is enchanting.

LOL that is a portrait of my personality.Sybil is really good. First it makes me think of the movie and then it makes me think of Sibyl Vane from The Picture of Dorian Gray, who kills herself because she's so insanely romantic that she cannot bear it when her lover leaves her and she has to live in reality again. It is a name of passion, passion, PASSION. Sadness mixed with passion. It needs a middle name with lots of twisty vowels, I think. Sybil Rowena, that type of thing. Vowels that contort your mouth.Sybil Rowena
Sybil Leontine
Sybil Cordelia
Sybil Angeline
Sybil Rupinder
Sybil Reason

I looove the three passions that explain Sybil. You are so right. It really is a wild and untamed sort of name. I am now officially obsessed with it.Hooray for:Sybil Rowena
Sybil Leontine - oh yes
Sybil Cordelia - gorgeousssss
Sybil Reason - Should it be...Sybil Reason Over Passion!?

HA I was wondering why Sybil Reason came to me.

on second thoughtI think it really should be Sybil Passion over Reason. I'm way too reasonable and that's not something I'd want to pass on to a daughter. I want my girl to run wild in the brambles!
