Laurence
I was thinking about this name last night when I started fretting needlessly (as I often do) about how I could be able to honour my mom if I had a son instead of a daughter. Her name is Lori, so I thought maybe Laurence. (I also like Lauritz, which is like a magical mashup of her names, Lori Rita - Rita is my great-grandmother whose nickname was Ritz).
Is Laurence a close enough boy version of Lori, do you think? What do you think of Laurence - do you prefer Lawrence, or think it is just too geeky and not ripe for revival?

Well, Lori and Laurence are related... I think I prefer Laurence, but Lawrence isn't completely horrible. Laurence just looks better.
It works.

LOL! yes, to me they are said the same way - they just have two very different looks!
Oh wow, I'm totally falling for Lauritz. I can feel it happening! Laurence/Lawrence is close enough to honour Lori, I think. I don't really have a spelling preference (shockingly, because that is usually a big deal for me). But I definitely think Lauritz is fun, fresh, and delightfully loaded with meaning for you. Do it (assuming you are actually pregnant...or it this a futuristic hypothetical naming situation?)!!
Ohh no it is all hypothetical! Not anywhere close to having kids yet. I just like to torment myself with thinking about honouring problems! LOL
I dig Lauritz too - it really is lots of fun. Thanks so much for the comments!

I like Lawrence. We are going to use that as a middle name (honoring) for our first son.
I think it's close enough to Lori; not too many ways to get closer, are there? Although I do love Lorne. Then again, I know Loris/Lauries who get testy about being mistaken for Lauren, etc., and vise versa. So maybe it would be more of a little point of annoyance than honoring. ;-)
I like Lauritz, though I think I am visually leaning toward Laurits. Although then it misses the point of Ritz. :-/ For the long O sound I might personally consider Loritz. I don't know much about Danish pronunciation but with my little German speaking ability I look at Lauritz and see "LOW-ritz" instead of "LAWR-itz." The Dutch Maurits' pronunciation key is MOW-rits. That's just what I see for the 'au' combination in similar names, though again, I don't know about Danish.
I love Lawrence to pieces. It's so handsome and manly. :-D My favorite combos for it have long been Lawrence Douglas, Richard Lawrence, and William Lawrence. I have a friend Wade Lawrence; while I didn't need any encouragement for Lawrence, it has definitely made Wade less dorky and more capable of being attractive than it was before to me!
I wouldn't choose Laurence myself but I don't have a problem with it. Kind of like Elizabeth vs. Elisabeth for me: while I have a preference, I don't think the other takes away from the name.

Thanks! Yes, the fact that Lauritz is Danish is a little tricky - I would say it like "Lorrits", and it would trouble me if I was saying it incorrectly. I know a Danish girl - I'll ask her!
I like it very much, with both spellings, and think it would be lovely as homage to your mom. It's a handsome solid saint's name, and it has many good namesakes, like Laurence Olivier and Lawrence of Arabia - oh, and Laurence Fishburne, he's pretty cool. Oh, and a big famous river!
I know three of them; one Lawrence (always goes by full name) one Laurie (male, full name Laurence) and one Laurence who is female, but hey, she's Swiss.
Lauritz is pretty funky too, but I think I'd go with Lawrence. Or Laurent, but maybe that's too French?

I don't think Laurent's too French - we've got lots of French ancestry so I could always claim I'm tapping into that.
I keep flipping between Laurence and Lawrence - sometimes I love the chunky clunkiness of Lawrence, and sometimes I prefer the sleeker more refined Laurence. I'm torn! Maybe if I came up with a combo I adored...

Sorry to but in. But Laurent is beyond gorgeous. It's almost too good to use, know what I mean.
But I do know one. A U.S. boy named Jean-Paul Laurent. How neat is that? His father is German-American and his mother is Vietnamese American. He's so good looking too. He goes by Jean-Paul or J.P. We're not in a French speaking area, but I'm surprised how often he goes by Jean-Paul.
Anyway. Laurent is to die for gorgeous. And it may be easier for non-French speakers to use than you might think. :-) I'm now torn between Laurent and Lauritz for you.

I know a Laurent in passing too, and he hangs out with mostly English people (He's french-Canadian) and nobody has trouble with his name. We say it a little flatter than we should I'm sure, but we do pretty good. I've never met anyone who calls him "Lorrent" or anything - but then I don't know him very well.
I love Lauritz but I could see myself using Laurent more easily for sure. It's more "me" - more romantic rather than edgy.

I feel guilty loving Laurence for a boy the way I do. One terrible day I learned that it's actually a French feminine name, not masculine. Oh, the horror. Now I have to wrestle with my conscience. I'm always nagging others about authenticity when it comes to gender. Not I'm caught in my own trap.
But then I have a cookie and all is well in hypocrite-town.
One of the best combos I ever saw in the real world was Eamonn Laurence. Oh, the loveliness of that one. Lucky boy.
I love both Lawrence and Laurence for a boy. Lawrence is more stately. Laurence is more romantic. It just depends on which image I want to project at that moment.
Yes, Laurence is a wonderful way to honor Mom Lori. But I have to give preference to Lauritz. That mashup is toooooo cooooool to pass by. Plus, I love Lauritz anyway. You could have another nn Ritz on your hands, this time a boy. :-)

oh no, French feminine name! Well, I don't know too many hard-core French people - I bet most wouldn't notice :)
Lauritz really is too cool isn't it?? I love it. It's fun and interesting, but I wonder if its too girlish?

How is Lauritz girly? It's got hard edges and looks kind of snarly. (Men, take note of my picture of you in general.)

Maybe it's because I think of an old woman when I see the Ritz part! :)

Sorry. I can't make this image work. If you do an image search on google to "putting on the ritz fred astaire" you'll see an image of Fred up in the air in top hat and tails. It's very amusing and was supposed to give you a more masculine association than your grandmother.

No, no. Puttin' on Lauritz :P
LOL! So sorry. I couldn't resist.

Thanks! I'm glad you think so :)
I quite like Lawrence (that spelling), actually. It seems like a clsoe enough match, especially since you mentioned it was a mash of your mother's first and middle name.
Definitely not geeky, in my opinion. I always thought it was a bit more regal.

Thanks! It does have a very serious, stiff upper lip quality to it, doesn't it.
Lori is a variant of Laura; Laurence and Laura basically mean the same thing ("laurel") so no, Laurence isn't far off from Lori. I quite like Laurence. I'm a huge Little Women fan so "Teddy/Laurie/Laurence" always have a special place in my heart. It was also the name of my great-great grandfather and his father, too.
I much prefer Laurence over Lawrence. Laurence is handsome and soft yet still masculine. Lawrence kinda irks me today; its the "w".

Yeah, I know what you mean. Every once ina while it's like I see it as Lawrench :(
