Agnes
This name seems to divide people here on the board, which spiked my interest enough to post about it. You either love it or hate it, and there is no in-between.
So, WDYT of Agnes? Ancient and unappealing? Timeless and beautiful? Are you one of the precious few who is indifferent to it? I'm eager to hear your opinion.

I suppose I fall under the category of precious few who are indifferent to it. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either.
I love it immensely.
Indifferent for me. Yes, I'm one of those few people. I just think it's a little pretty, but it also sounds harsh. :/ Many non-name nerds don't like the name Agnes, too.
Well, I like the nn Aggie, but I prefer it as a nn for Agatha, which I also prefer over Agnes, but I suppose I'm one of those indifferent people since I don't really hate Agnes.
I like it. I probably wouldn't saddle a girl with it unless the father liked it too. Aren't 'old' names coming back in a renegade naming trend?

Its harsh and ugly in my opinion... but the french way of pronouncing it is 'an YESS' which i think is beautiful

Love it.
I think it's fresh and endearing, oozing of old-fashioned charm.

I think Agnes is a sweet name. It's one of those names I like to see others use but wouldn't use myself. It's quite popular here though, it was #14 last year. By the way, the way it is pronounced here, there is no G sound in Agnes. It's ahng-nes. I don't care for the English pronunciation, I think it sounds very harsh, but I don't hate it.
I don't like it. I don't know why either. I want to like it. I should like it - it fits my style - but I just don't. I much prefer Agatha.
I really like it. I used to like it enough to consider using, but I'm not really at that point anymore. I think it has a very "good" feel-- proper, moral, religious, etc. And I adore the nn Aggie. But Agatha has replaced Agnes as my favorite Aggie-nn-name. I find it to be much more open and approachable.
I don't find it ancient. It strikes me as sweet and pure and I wish it was more loved.
I like it. Annis and Annesta are nice too.
Assuming you are using the English pronunciation, I simply despise it. The ag- sound is too similar to hag. Plus, I had a great aunt named Agnes who went by Ag, and her personality left alot to be desired! For me, I'm afraid Agnes will always be a short, cranky old woman to avoid.
I am in between. I've thought this the ugliest name for most of my life, but lately I've been liking it. I would never use it for my child, but it's starting to grow on me. And I like Nessa or Nessie for a nn.
I think Agnes is beautiful. I wouldn't call it a favorite, and I wouldn't use it but it seems kind of soft and gentle to me so I like it. I like that it's got such a hard beginning with such a soft ending, and visually it's very appealing. I kind of want to love it, I just don't :(
I love Agnes.
I wouldn't call it timeless, though, and I don't even think it's "beautiful." I would call it strong and striking.

It sounds really cool, but I don't have the guts to actually use it. It's mostly a GP for me. I like the nickname "Aggie", though.
Either love or hate, and no in between? Not exactly, for me.
I hate it, yet I feel a loyalty to it. I hate the way it sounds. I really hate the AG sound. Yet I feel a strange loyalty to it because it was my paternal grandmother's name, and so I really like to see other people say that they like or love it.
When I was pregnant with my son, my mother-in-law and I were discussing potential names for a girl. We were discussing using a middle name to honor a family member. She asked me what my grandmother's name was, and when I said, "Agnes", she exclaimed, "Ohh, nooo" in a horrified tone. And I was offended. Even though I don't like the name myself. It was kind of along the lines of criticizing a family member yourself but then being offended if an outsider does. I wished I liked the name because I hate to agree with my mother-in-law on anything. I wish I had been able to say, "Well, I think it's a beautiful name, and I'm going to use it!"
Anyway, yeah, I hate it, but I feel loyal to it, and I like it when others like it. But if it weren't for the family connection, I'm sure I'd just hate it.

That makes sense. It's sort of like me and Sally; I don't love it, but if anyone else puts it down, I jump in to defend it. Strange, since I would have blasted the name just a few weeks ago, before I learned that it would be the name of my future niece. I guess family has that affect on you.
I don't love or hate it, but I do quite like it, it's my grandmother's name (but she goes by her middle name as she dislikes Agnes), and also the name of her grandmother.
