I like it - it makes me think of a shy, sweet boy with fair hair flopping over his eyes. I think since Sandy is not popular for girls any more either, it is a pretty safe choice for a nickname for a young boy. I would, to be honest, immediately think a "Sandy Smith" was a girl however - I do not think of Sandy as unisex - I KNOW it is, but my brain doesn't immediately click into that right away. But if he puts Alexander on the roll call list but his friends and parents call him Sandy, that's cool.
