A little off-topic, but in a French speaking environment, I would think a tréma (¨) really would be necessary in the name Eloise, to avoid it sounding like ell-WAZZ. Éloïse looks more whimsical anyway.

Yes, that would be the case and the correct thing to do. But I have seen French speaking parents (in Canada) avoiding the trema and accent in the spelling so it would be more universal.
