It's still widely used in South Africa, usually pronounced Marta but spelt Martha. I dislike it: it's always seemed flabby and slow-moving. The only English-speaking Martha I know (with a -th-) is slim, fit, attractive-looking and ... disturbed. So my ideas about her and her name aren't reliable.
