Interesting to see Valmae - I posted about it a while back, there were quite a few of them in Wales in the 1920s-30s, spelt Valmai.
Thain is kind of interesting too - a surname, maybe?

I must have missed your post: I know a 65-year-old South African who was going to be Valmae, Valmai or perhaps Valmay but they settled on Valerie instead. And in Afrikaans the letter y is always a vowel and sounds like ay. The head girl at my daughter's school last year was Valmy which looks like a French battlefield to me, but it was pronounced like Valmay. She's by far the youngest example I've ever encountered.
