Pookie was the name of the main character of the novel and the movie "The Sterile Cuckoo." I seem to recall that it was a nickname, but I can't recall what her real name was. But then, maybe it wasn't a nickname. It's been a long long time since I've read that book.

I can only imagine it as a nickname, not as a real given name. Even then, it's silly sounding.
