In South Africa Van is always the 'hero' of the kind of jokes told about people from an unfashionable part of the country/end of town. So my opinion is heavily distorted! As long as he never meets a South African or visits the country, why not?

I've always thought of Van as a girls' name, because I grew up with a Vietnamese girl with the name.

I think Van is a great name for all stages of life. MN possibilities are endless. Nothing particular comes to mind right now except that it would be preferable to use two or more syllables.

My cat's name is Van Gogh, we call him Van.
But anyways, I like it. Especially if it's paired with a good middle name.

I like it as a nickname for Ivan.

Van sounds like a rock star's name. I don't disapprove.

I'm not sure that I like it as a stand alone name. Maybe make it short for something?
