Funny, I actually planned on asking pretty much the same questions on Esther later today. :-)
I have a huge crush on this name at the moment. I never thought it would happen but it did ;-)
I don't see Esther as too old-ladyish as I know two women my age (mid-20s) named this. And even if it was an "old-lady-name" - I tend to love those anyway; I love Mabel and Enid as well.
Hmmm, it's probably different in English-speaking countries but I know that a lot of people around here are put off of this name because of the chemical association, Esther - even "worse" yet Ester - and ester sound and look the same to them... Plus, they think this name has too harsh a ring to it, it's not "girly" enough. I used to think the same, but now, all of a sudden, I find this quality very attractive. Like dark chocolate.
Anyways, I really, really like this name and if I were to use it, I would probably pair it with a family name of mine. Something like Esther Miriam, Esther Dorothea or Esther Lydia
