I think Amaya is lovely and I pronounce it the same way as you do. I think I actually might prefer Amaya to Maya.

I like it pronounced Ah-MY-ah. It's pretty.

Its nice. I prefer uh-MY-uh though.

I think of "Am I a ...?" and I remember another naming site where the parents were planning to name their dd Amaya Johnson. I and several others tried to convince them that it wasn't a good idea. I'm not sure the parents-to-be took our advice.

I've never heard the name pronounced a-MAY-a but if that's a common pronunciation where you live, you could get away with it.

I kinda like it.

I think you will definitely get some trip-ups over pronunciation if you prefer "uh-may-uh". I immediately read it as "ah-MY-ah".

It is a beautiful name, but I think I prefer the original Basque spelling of Amaia. the spelling of Amaya also reminds me of "papaya" - which isn't bad at all, but distracting for me :)
