Elizabeth "Effy"
I've known this girl named Effy for quite some time and recently I found out her full name is actually Elizabeth. So what do you think of Elizabeth "Effy"? Have you ever met an Effy? Was it her full name or short for something?Oh and is Effy really a nickname for Elizabeth? I always thought it was short for....hmm something else :P

As someone who has grown up surrounded by Daniels who go by Benno and Ralphs who go by Max, I'm quite tolerant when it comes to nicknames ;-)So, yes, I think Effy for Elizabeth is fine.
(I've recently read somewhere that Tetti is an old nickname for Elizabeth, too. So why not Effy? After all, it's just a nickname.)I know an Evgenia who goes by Effie.

I could see Effy as a nn for Elizabeth. It reminds me of Buffy, in which the TH sound is converted to an F. It's pretty cool. I like Effy/Effie but have struggled to come up with a full name I like for it. Elizabeth works well, however.

I think Elizabeth already has too many nicknames, so Euphemia or Josephine would be the better choice and "Effie" is better. =PNo I have never met and Effy, but my great grandmother or aunt was named Effie Florence.I'm not sure if it was a nickname for anything.

There's a character in the TV series 'Skins' (which I love) whose name is Elizabeth nn Effy. I've no idea how that nickname came to be, though.

Really? I've never heard of the show but I'll tell her about it. I thought it was unknown of. Hmm so does that mean it really is a short form of Elizabeth?

I guess it does. My theory on its origin is that someone took Ethy/Ethie and replaced the -th with -ff for easier pronunciation, but this is really only a very wild guess.

InterestingI love Elizabeth and I love Effie, but Effie isn't related to Elizabeth and I don't see how it makes sense to be a nickname for Elizabeth. It isn't necessarily a nickname for anything, although sure seems like it ought to be. It could be short for Euphemia, Josephine, or Persephone. I've never actually met an Effie/Effy.If we can figure out that it really does make sense for Effie to be a nn for Elizabeth, I will be very happy. It has to make sense though becuase I'm like that. :P

It makes sense as a childhood nickname because th's are hard to pronounce at a young age and usually come out as F's. "Elizabeff"-->Effy. That's my understanding of it. I like it a lot.

Oh!I get it! I'm excited to ask DH if he likes Effie as a nn for Elizabeth. He'll probably say no. Not that he could stop me from using it if I had a daughter already named Elizabeth. :P

Yep, if Buffy can come from Elizabeth, I don't see a problem with Effie!I'm not personally a fan of Effie as a nickname but I could definitely see it working (sounds kind of similar to Bethy as well...)
