hil AIR ee a. Like hilarious but with an a instead of an ous.If I heard it, I'd think of a plant, specifically a little flowering bush called Halleria Lucida which a cheeky botanist nicknamed Hilarious Lucy (for its cheerful habit of producing flowers for most of the year I suppose) and for a while it caught on. I certainly wouldn't think of it as human!

I'd say hil-AR-ia, because otherwise it sounds too much like hilarious. Ilaria would avoid any confusion. :)

I would pronounce it, "hih-LEHR-ee-uh" or "hih-LAIR-ee-uh." (That's the same pronunciation written two different ways.)My sister's name is Hilary so I may be biased. But Hilaria is fresh and appealing to me. I knew a woman with this name who spelled it HaLarear. She pronounced it the same way you do. The spelling is all the more surprising because I'm in the U.S. where we take our "r's" seriously. And yet, HaLarear was said just like Hilaria. She said she had no idea why it was like that; it was a family name.

Too close to hilarious.
Either pronunciation, as long as it's not hill-a-REE-a like diarrhea.

Ditto on hilarious.

Too close to Hillary for my tastes (for obvious reasons). Ilaria without the H is much prettier.

It deserves more attention, as it's the kind of frilly name many people find popular, yet it's constantly overlooked outside Spanish-speaking countries.
I say Hil-AHR-ia.
Ilaria is very nice as well.
The meaning is lovely and the feeling is jaunty.
