I don't know, I never learn who Sappho was in any of my years of public schooling. I hardly think of it as THE byword for lesbianism, it's not like you're naming the kid "Sapphire, nicknamed Dyke" or anything like that.

Plus, with the name Sapphire, "Sappho" might be an accidental use of her name anyways, the way kids play with the sounds of each other's names (like Jacko, Mikey, Jeffy, Carlo, etc). So the whole "Sappho means lesbian" thing might come up anyways. Just sayin.
