I like it fine, but I feel that it should only be a nickname. It seems too insubstantial on its own. As a nickname for James, it would be fine. This is my half-brother's name, but his full name is Joseph. He was named after my father. It wasn't really necessary to give him an unrelated nickname, since my father himself went by a nickname unrelated to Joseph, but somehow they decided to call him Jay. I guess because it sounds like J, the first letter of Joseph.
