My brother and I+
are Jean(that's me) and John, which is pretty much the same name, really.
However, we are 9 years apart in age. And both of us are named for family members.
We take it calmly.

Wow.
Why is almost everyone so negative about this? If I had twins, I probably wouldn't pick really matchy names either but ones that go well together.
However, I think this is a personal decision, so why is everyone acting like matching names are a crime that should be punished with a slow and brutal death? Come on, it's probably just for a story anyway.
I like Charlotte & Dorothea as a set, btw.

I don't recall stating that it is nearly a crime or commenting on how the parents should be treated in any way other than to say that I completely disagree with the line of thinking, which in no way implies the sort of punishment or reaction you state here. And I assume that the "why" question is rhetorical since we do a pretty good job of explaining that it is less to do with names that "go well together" as it is with the implication brought on by names like "Hannah and Anna" that parents view the two separate children as two halves of one whole.
It is extremely irritating when a poster rags on other posters' opinions while playing the "it is a personal decision" or "just my opinion" card. Obviously! And we just gave ours, same as you're doing now.

I don't recall saying that you stated that it is nearly a crime (I remember saying "almost everyone" and "acting like"). About the punishment: Exaggeration is a rhetorical device.
And my "why" question was probably just as rhetorical as yours. I have read your comment and I understand perfectly well that Hannah & Anna do not make great twin names but you did not comment on those but on names that are pretty different from each other apart from having the same initial (Maya and Michelle for example.) Plus you seemed to despise naming twins any different from naming usual siblings in general ("Just name them like you would any other two children you would have").
It is extremely irritating when a poster commands others to never ever use paired names on twins but then claims to just have given an opinion. I did not read ONE "I think", "I would" or "in my opinion" in your comment.

You may have been exaggerating, but it did not properly capture the true spirit of our comments, which is why I took offense and responded in the first place. Not to "pick a fight." And yes, I do despise the practice of naming twins cutesy matched set twin names. I don't despise their parents or the twins. So... not sure why that's relevant or how that somehow suggests that I am a name Nazi. A lot of people absolutely hate a lot of specific names (Nevaeh, anyone?), and again, that is just their opinions and doesn't mean that they are going to bash or trash parents of Nevaehs in real life.
And I was under the impression that one need not qualify a statement as an opinion since this is an opinions board. Duh -- opinion board = opinions! More often than not, people cite when something is actually a fact.
I read your pre-edited post above this and was not going to bother to respond, but it seems the more you edit it, the ruder you are getting. So I am done with you now.
+ Last thing -- re: Maya and Michelle. No, I did not comment on those two names. Those aren't actually THAT bad. I commented on the act of asking what special names twins should have.

Off-topic
Ok, first of all, I was actually editing to make my point without being rude. If you read the final version of my post and still consider it rude, I'm sorry for that, I don't.
Now something very off-topic but important to me: Please do not use the word Nazi so inconsiderately. Before you take this as being rude again: I'm not trying to offend you but uttering a request.

Sorry about "Nazi". Just as you exaggerated about my opinion, I did that to you. I was not being inconsiderate, but you acted as though I were trying to force my opinion as the only right one (which is untrue)... so you can see how I got that comparison.

I'd just use my two favorite girl names. I don't like themed names for twins. If I had twin daughters now, they'd be Margaret Beatrix & Elspeth Naomi, just as if I had two daughters one at a time.
My #3 and #4 names for girls are Julia and Sylvia, and if I'd already used Margaret and Elspeth I'd be a little worried that they're too similar for twins (with the -ia endings). Similarly, with Elspeth being my #2 for girls and Ezra being my #1 for boys, it'd be feasible that those would come up together. I'm not sure I'd use Elspeth and Ezra as twins just because I think the E thing is annoying.

Amelia and Eliza
I really like these two right now.
I really like these two right now.
Do you mean to say Nura and Nerina as twins, and Arianna and Aurora, and Maya and Michelle?
I don't think that twins need to deliberately be given the same initial. I'd choose two names I liked that went well together just as would with any other two daughters born apart. Maybe Agatha and Beatrice, or Agatha and Cordelia, or Beatrice and Cordelia. Ugh, maybe I'd be better off having triplets. ;)

Jane and Xochiquetzal.
Brilliant! :)
:)
my girls names start with the same sound
But they're not twins.
And the names are totally different.
:)
So I personally think it's fine, but not necessary to do it on purpose.

If those are the names you like...
Then they're fine. But no need to purposely match them.
I am also a twin, and we are completely different people.

Haven't been on this soapbox in a while...
Why do people insist that twins have cutesy matched twinsy names? Just name them like you would any other two children you would have. Yes, they shared a womb. People will be reminding them that and annoying them with questions like "Do you have a secret language? Do you feel each other's pain?"
They are two separate individuals with two separate personalities and identities. The entire concept of paired names indicates that one thinks of twins as a joined entity, a paired set. Twins are not socks; they are not salt and pepper shakers. One is fine without the other, and giving them cutesy paired names takes away from that.
+ Yes, I am a twin. Yes, we have "paired" names. Yes, we hate it.

ditto
When there are BAs with twinsets like Hannah and Anna or Peyton and Payton I always wonder if the parents realized they're two separate beings or do they think they're photocopies? I find it odd that people would do this at a time when, esp. with identicals, you're adivced to try to make twins as individual as possible, not dressing them alike, placing them in different classes.
This said, I must confess I like the idea of "secret themes" for twins, such as names that look and sound totally different but have similar meanings (eg. I like Malka and Regina as a twinset). So it's not obviously matchy and no one would really notice it unless they 're into name etymology, and the kids themselves wouldn't really notice until they start wondering about the meanings of their names.

I like secret themes across any sibset! If you're going to do themes anyway, that's the way to go.
Can't shout AMEN loud enough!
This.
Why don't people just say 'What are your two favourite girls names?' or 'What names would you give to sisters / two daughters'?
Like, my favourite names are Agatha and Beatrice and that's what I'd name daughters one and two but if I had twins I would totally name them Guinevere Jane and Genevieve Jean! Or Norah and Rohan, get it, because they're acronymns!!?!

Seriously. I've never thought about what I'd name twins particularly. I'd just have to come up with two names I like, and that'd be the easy part!
My sister and I aren't twins, but we did get cutesy matching K names.

I am a twin too...
And I completely agree. We have the same middle name but we don't have matching first names so generally we don't have any problems name wise. There really is no need to pair them up more than needed, the dumb questions are enough "Do you guys dress alike?! Or like the same guys?!" I have seen twins though with exactly the same names and I felt so sorry for them. That is basically like saying you're the same person.

Eh not really, I've never used my middle name...
and neither have my parents. Ever. I think it's just there so I'd have a middle initial to be honest. And no one else knows it so it never bothered us at all really. I'd rather have the same middle name than be "Rose and Lily" "Mae and Rae" "Madelyn and Madison," I know sisters that have the same middle name and they aren't twins so I never really thought it was that odd.

Jen. We're identical.
More often than not we were just a "Je..." sound that trailed off because they weren't sure which ending to add. But it wasn't too bad because I'm quite a bit taller than she is.

Agree
I don't get why people think it's cute to give twins matchy names either. I don't like it one bit, although I'm not a twin. You have more say in the issue. :)
