WDYTO Lemuel?
Great alternative to Samuel (which I don't like at all) or stuck forever in lamedom?
It is a family name for me, as is the nickname Lem (or in the case of the ancestor, Lem John). And I have to admit I like the fact that Lem sounds a bit bluesy to me--imagine boys Lem and Lyle, hee. They'd have to be born with the guitars already in their hands.

Get into the car
We'll be the passenger
We'll ride through the city tonight
See the city's ripped insides
We'll see the bright and hollow sky
We'll see the stars that shine so bright
The sky was made for us tonight

I think Lemuel sounds good and as a family name it would be a perfect mn, maybe even a good fn.
But personally I just picture an animal looking like a guinea pig or a hamster, b/c I think of a lemming.
I also think of Lemuel Gulliver (gullible) in "Gulliver's Travels".
"You sought a flower and found a fruit. You sought a spring and found a sea. You sought a woman and found a soul. You are disappointed."
"It does not become me to make myself smaller than I am." (Edith Södergran 1891-1923)

I don't mind Lemuel, but somewhere in the back of my brain, a little imp keeps trying to tell me that it's French for "the mule" ("le muel" lol) which of course isn't true but I always end up thinking it when I see that name!

It's forever ingrained in my mind as a 19th century kind of name with little hope of escaping from it. Plus Lem reminds me of Lemmy from Motorhead, which is not exactly an appealing image.
I like it! I like Samuel, too.
I think it's nice. Not a name I would use, but it's a good alternative to really common names.
