I prefer Steven, because it's less confusing. I always used to think Stephen was pronounced "STEH-fan", and I still read it like that, sometimes. Saying that, my dad and friend are both called Steven, so I'm somewhat biased. ;-)

I like both Stephen (for Stephen Stills and St. Stephen) and Steven (for my Uncle Steve)--and as of late the Steven spelling has won out for me. Steven James sounds fantastic to me (and not just because that's my uncle's name), personally. Other Steve combos: Steven Richard, Steven Lars, Steven Micah, Steven Lewis, Steven Andrew, Steven Samuel, Steven Luke.

Steve is a very nice, snappy nickname. It sounds very manly and hard-working to me--like the kind of guy who can overcome anything. Stevo is another fun one, though it's a bit too SLC Punk for me.

I prefer the spelling with a V because of the unambiguous pronunciation. But I'm used to Stephen too - that was my neighbor's name when I was growing up. I'm biased about liking Steven nn Steve because there's one in my family. Steve is one of those super-butch one-syllable names, you know? I'd only be concerned about the "date" on it. There were tons of Steves named 30-40 years ago, it seems to me. But a simple masculine name like that would not suffer much from dating.

It's okay, it's not really my style but it has a nice meaning and a fairly good history and it's not used very often.
The thing I hate about the name Stephan is that it's always shortened to Steve or Stevie! I just don't like that very much.
