I realize Ruth is one of those names that is becomming fashionable again and I agree it is understated, but it still sounds stern to me. For that reason, I don't like it. Sure Ruthie is cute, but almost any thing sounds cute with "ie" tacked on the end.

If I was going for understated, I would rather use Mary, Martha, Anne, Clair or Nora.
