Valerie for a boy ? ? ?
My SIL already has two boys, Whitney and Courtney. Now she want to name the next Valerie "because it goes so well with the other two." Yuck.
Has anyone heard of Valerie for a boy? I mean, this woman won't admit it but she wanted daughter (you should see Whitney and Courtney's hair - almost makes the name sound tame. But my brother lets her do whatever she wants.
Is this as bad as I think or am I overreacting?

I'd suggest Avery or Addison.
I know Valerie can be a boys' name, but I don't think it's nearly as commonly used for American boys as Whitney and Courtney. I wouldn't be at all surprised to meet a male Whitney or Courtney, though I assume people with those names are female because they're more popular for girls and have been for a while.
If your brother and SIL like "unisex" names for their sons, I'd suggest Avery or Addison. I think either one sounds nice with Whitney and Courtney and aren't too uncommon to see on boys even though they're quite popular for girls.

Well, it's better than Whitney or Courtney. He can go by Val. I don't really like it though...
About the hair thing. For me, it really depends on how long and if they still look like boys. My cousin wouldn't cut her son's hair and he looked like a little girl. It was nearly to his waist before she cut it.

I love Valery for a boy...I've known a couple. Val is very handsome. I like your sister-in-laws taste in names!
I think it's awful for a boy. Valentine or Valentino would be better, but Valerie? Yuck.

Each time I see that name ChopSocky, it sounds to me like one of the names of the demon characters in The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis.

The Screwtape Letters? Never heard of it. I just changed my screen name because I was tired of TheDreadedSockMonkey taking up too much space.
I like Whitney and Courtney for boys, but I'm not a fan of Valerie for a boy. I like the Russian Valeriy, but it's pronounced different. I don't think it's so horrible that it would be impossible to live with but I do thin it's a retty feminine name.
Girl's name. Wow... Whitney and Courntey, too?
And tell her husband to cut those boys' hair.

Um, honey... Whitney, Courtney, and Valery are boys' names... as is Alexis.
Courtney
Courtney is perfectly fine for a male, actually.
Also: Tell the woman to cut her childrens hair simply because her sister-in-law doesn't like it? No. The parents have the final say in their childrens hairstyles.

oops double post
No they don't. The kids have the final say because it's their hairstyles.

Well...
It depends on the kids' ages, and how much they care about the subject. And anyway, parents at least have a much stronger influence than anyone else.

Wow, all of the boys and men in our family have long hair...I see nothing wrong with it!
my ex boyfriend is named Courtney :)

Nope she's not cutting it
A couple of days after school was out, she told them she was taking them to get their hair (presumably) cut. Instead, she had both boys' hair permed. They look like little Faraw Fawcets. (I mean, before she died, you know.

Um...
If it was their idea that's fine, but she has to cut it the way Whitney and Courtney want it. Someone needs to tell her she has her own hair to do what SHE wants with...

I think that you mean Farrah.
Seriously, styling her sons hair in a way that you dislike/diasapprove of is hardly the worst thing your sister-in-law can do. If you want to have this discussion then start a thread on it in The Lounge.

Oh, God. Sounds like she's the ruler of that household. My dad would have a FIT.
I like it
You really don't think it sounds/looks like a girl?
Spelled Valery maybe
I agree. I believe that's legit Polish (Walery I think).
