Blech! As others have noted, this is a common role in many protestant churches (and Catholic, apparently). Not only is the sound really severe, but what if the person is not a Christian, and they are saddled with such an overtly religious name? This is like naming your kid Reverend, Pastor, Priest, Cardinal, Pope... It's just funny, to me, and way too presumptuous. But for those of you who like it, there is also the feminine version, Deaconess!
