Re: Spencer

For some reason, I find this name incredibly annoying. Recently there was a thread about which names we found most pretentious. I couldn't think of any at the time, so I didn't respond to that post. I wish I had thought of Spencer. I find it pretentious.
Maybe it's because, for a brief time several years ago, I worked with a woman who had a five-year-old son named Spencer. Our work situation was such that we sat close beside each other and had nothing to do for five hours straight. She did nothing but talk about Spencer. And slipped in every opportunity to tell everyone who happened by that Spencer looked exactly like his father, who was a good-for-nothing sperm donor. I always wondered what psychological mechanism was at work that made her compulsively tell everyone that her son looked exactly like someone she despised, even though she seemed completely besotted with Spencer.
Anyway, maybe that's made me prejudiced against the name. :-D
