I'm not a fan. I've got a name which is technically a nickname/pet name but has been used as a full name for a while now (and is currently more popular than the name it's derived from), and I've always been annoyed that my parents didn't give me the more formal version. I personally feel like my name is really childish. I'm sure most people don't see it that way (it's pretty popular for my age group) but I see it that way and it bothers me.

I think having more options is better. A nickname as a full name is pretty limiting, IMO.
