Nicknames
Just curious are you a person who plans on giving your children nicknames whether its a Charles nn Charlie or a Victoria nn Tweetie lol, or are you a person who strictly hates nicknames and wont give your children one even if its an Alexander, no Alex! I personally dont plan on giving mine any. I hate nicknames. (I dont think Betty is just a nickname imo so that doesnt count)

I'm big on nicknames. I give my pets hundreds of silly ones, and the kids all have heaps too. I'm perfectley happy to use names that don't come with built in nicknames, cause I know they'll get them anyway. EG Jet's name is very short, but I call him Jetty and Jetster and Jet pack and Jetjet, among others.
My kids will probably get:
Xanthe Lyric Delphine nn Xan, Xanth, Xanners, Xanadu, Xampers, Xanthe Lyric, Xaxa, Xanthers
Adelaide Lucy Aviva nn Addie, Addie Lou, Addie May (from her mn's), plus theres Laidey, Ladybug, or even Della
Sonnet Anneliese Sophia nn Sass and Sassy, from her intials, and also Sonnet Blue Bonnet and Netty
August Malachi H. nn Gus, Augs, Auggie, Augster, Auggie M, Grumpy Gus etc.
Ok, you get the idea. I love me some nns.

I don't generally tend to like nicknames for my favorite names, but I've got nothing against them. There are exceptions of course. Pavel "Pasha", Helena "Lena", Scheherazade "Hera", Edith "Edie", Isobel "Iso", Soleil "Sol". I like all the full names enough to use them most often in these cases, though.
If I liked the nickname better and didn't figure I was going to use the full name ever, I'd just use the nn and screw the fn. For example, if I liked Millie but not Millicent, I'd trash Millicent and go with only Millie (for the record, I really hate both Millie and Millicent).

I love nicknames, especially not so obvious/common ones. That said, there are some names I love that I wouldn't use as fns because I don't like any of the nns (like Matilda).
Nicknames I'd use:
Tamsin - Zinny
Violet - Vi, Letty, maybe Posy
Sarah - Sadie
Carlotta - Carly, Carla, Lottie, Charlie
Cassandra - Cassa
Alistair - Ali
Dafydd - Dai
Josephine - Jo, maybe Josie
Nathaniel - Nat
Christian - Kit
Rosetta - Etta
Stephanie - Steph, Stephie, Stevie

I'd use a nickname if I absolutely loved it. I'd just happen to give them the long version of the name, officially, so that they could switch to that if they so preferred when they were older. Also, sometimes, I like somewhat extravagent names with nice simple nn's, in which case I find it just practical.
For example:
Belladonna or Mehetebel nn Belle
Miriam nn Miri or Molly
Theodora nn Theo
Desdemona nn Mona
Demetrius nn Dmitri
Fionnbharr nn Finn
Thierry nn Ty

My whole family uses nicknames. My father NEVER calls me by my real name, ever. Odd, since he is the one who named me.
So it's safe to say I don't have a problem with them. I will probably give my child a NN, just to keep with tradition.

Considering that my two children both have nicknames, Victoria nn Torrie and William nn Will, obviously I don't have a problem with them. I come from a family who tended to use them. My sisters were Patricia nn Patty and Pamela nn Pam. And my father was Joseph nn Bud, a totally unrelated nickname. And now my grandsons are Leonidas nn Leo and Abraham nn Bram. I think they're fine, if it's a name that lends itself to a nickname, if the parents like the nickname, and if the child him or herself has no objections to it as an adult. Both my daughter and my son like their nicknames, but they also like having a more formal name on their birth certificates.
I had a cousin nick-named Bud; his actual first name was Campbell,(his Mother's maiden name.)
Also have an uncle named Edgar, nicknamed T.T.

I had a great-uncle named Edgar! He didn't have a nickname, though.
I have such a soft spot for Bud, only as a nickname, of course. This enthusiasm is not shared by many here, I fear.

off topic, slightly+
In my French-speaking area, a usual nick-name is 'Ti-Something, short for Petit. 'Ti-Guy, 'Ti-Jacques,''Ti-Marc. These persist for life. Sometims it's small stature, sometimes a younger child in a family, sometimes, a child who has the same name as a father or uncle.
Just guys, though. No 'Ti-Chantalle.

I would probably use whatever came naturally.
I'm not into nicknames, so I tend not to use them. If I had a Charles or Victoria, they would be Charles or Victoria to me most of the time. I refuse to waste time and energy, however, fighting natural, common nicknames. It's not worth it, imo. It wouldn't bother me a bit if my son was Charles to me and Charlie to my husband and the rest of the world. I would only correct people with an "it's Charles, not Charlie" if my son hated the nickname and asked for my help.
This is why, even though I'm not a nickname person, it's important to me that names I choose have nicknames I can accept.

Well I used to not even turn when my full name, Kimberly, was called. More and more of my teachers are using it so I'm getting used to it but I can't imagine not having a nickname, Kimberly seems like it could be a mouthful at times when someone just wants to be like "hey Kim," I always give characters in my stories nicknames for close friends and family.
Potential kid names:
Soren - Generally I'd call him this, maybe say Sor here and there but not as an official nickname.
Jude - Can't really shorten this or make it cute. Judie is a girl's name, definitely wouldn't call him that.
Mary - Mare? Again, not an official nickname, just maybe I'm calling her/doing something nickname.
Rosamund - I'd most definitely call her Rose (Rosie as a kid)
Seraphina / Serafina - I want to call her Fina or even Sera wouldn't bother me. She could be exposed to both and choose.

Nicknames are kind of childish but usually I don't mind them. I want to name my daughter Lillian and her nickname will be Lily. But I'm very strict when it comes to defining what is a whole name. Some of the only names that were originally nicknames that I think are full names now are Lisa and Jack.
My kids are practically guaranteed to have nns I really like them. I can see myself using certain ones as full names even, like Charlie, cause I hate Charles, but Charlie is fantastic. For example my top boy's name is Conway, but I would frequently call him Con and I really like Dorothy lately but I would call her Dottie.
I'm not fond of nicknames. I just don't like the idea of giving a child one name and then call him/her by another. The occasional nickname calling is ok and I think every parent/friend/relative does it, it's when parents never use the child's real name it annoys me.
I'm one of those who hate Alex as a nickname for Alexander. I wouldn't use a nickname for Alexander which is why I prefer Alexander as a middle name. None of my favorite names need a nickname and I definitely don't plan on using one but I guess there will be some nicknames used for thse names anyway. It's just not something I sit down and plan like "I'm going to use Eleanora, should I use Ellie or Nora?" I don't get people who constantly ask for nicknames as if you have to have a nickname for every name. What's wrong with calling a child by its full name?

I like nicknames. They give a person options if they don't like their full name. I have always wanted a one, because it's like having more than one name and thats great imo. So yeah I'd probably give my kid a nn.
I think I will use nicknames, yeah. I usually like short names better, but the majority of them are shortenings of something.
It depends on the name. Most of the names on my list don't have nicknames I like much, so I don't think I'll be using them (though I may have personality-based nicknames-- I'll have to meet the child first)
Some that do:
Mordecai "Cai" and Leopold "Leo"
Helena might be Laney while she's younger, Rosalie might be shorted to Rose from time to time, and Vivienne might sometimes be called Viv. But Cai and Leo would probably always be called Cai and Leo.
I'd also call Ashley either Ash or AJ (or by one of his middle names), if he has issues with his name. But I hope he won't.

Depends. If I liked the nickname that obviously came with the name, I'd use it, otherwise I wouldn't. Nicknames develop naturally anyway. Once the person that bears the name is old enough, he or she will come up with one if s/he wants one anyway. I don't worry much about that.
