My former boss' name was Tanya. She pronounced it with the short A, and would become quite annoyed when anyone pronounced it with the long A. I myself prefer the long A. I prefer the Tanya spelling.
Since she's the only Tanya I've ever known, the name makes me think of a very short, heavy-limbed, bleached blonde, very sweet and good-natured woman. I like the name, don't find anything objectionable about it, though it's not a favorite.
I could see a Tanya having sisters named Katie and Kristen.
