Carol

I think Carol is a name that people instantly overlook because it's not in line with current trends, but it's lovely and I wouldn't be surprised to see it revived early.
Honestly, I've never thought of Carol as a nickname for Caroline. Carol feels complete on its own, and I think of it strictly as referring to the type of song "carol". Then again, I just love Christmas!
I'd love to meet a little Carol. Even though it was ridiculously popular a few decades ago, now it would just be a sweet, underused name.

Carol is a name on its own, but I don't like it.
Carol can stand on its own. I really quite like it.

Carol definitely can stand on its own. It has two syllables and doesn't end in the "ee" sound, plus it means something on its own.
I think Carol is so passe that it is a tad comical, especially after the movie Juno, and that receptionist lady from Little Britain. I couldn't imagine a baby Carol, unless it was on one of those cut-off-from-society Mormon polygamist compounds in the middle of nowhere who have no sense of style. I can't include Carol with names with ironic camp appeal like Hattie and Betty.
