I prefer Miriam to any of the other forms you listed. My first reaction was that it is indeed dowdy, and also prissy. But that's probably only because it was not at all popular in my age group, and I think of it as an old lady name. When I stop and listen to the sound of it, I realize that it's rather pretty. It may be ready for a comeback, and may be ready to shed some of those old connotations.
