Emilia ..?
What do you think about the name Emilia?
I really don't care for Emily, but I think I do like the sound and look of Emilia. It doesn't even seem to have the same etymological roots as Emily (does it?).
1.) Do you think people will want to call her Emily as a nickname? What other nicknames might be derived? I don't think I mind Emmy as much, because it's the name one of my best friends goes by. Emma is kind of sweet, too, though I know it's a superpopular given name now.
2.) Do you think it would get confused with Amelia?
3.) Do you think Emilia, Emmy or Emma sound too close to the name Amy?
4.) Do you like Mariah and Emilia as sister names?

1. I think Em, Emmy, and occasionally Emma are the most likely nicknames. I doubt anyone would use Emily as a nickname, but I can easily imagine a stressed or careless reader glancing at the name and reading it as Emily.
2. Yes, all the time.
3. I think Emilia and Emma are quite different from Amy. Emmy is much closer.
4. Yes, they're very sweet for sisters!

I like it. I teach Spanish and this on e of the names I offer to the kids. I don't think people will use Emily as a nn. I thought of Emmy first. If you use a nn people usually follow suit with the family (usually). Em and Lia might be other nn. People might confuse it with Amelia if they don't see it written out. I don't think any of them sound like Amy. Mariah and Emilia make good sisters.
Historically, it does seem to have been confused with Amelia. I've come across cases of 18th/19th century girls baptised Amelia who were Emilias in later life and vice versa.
I think it's much prettier than Amelia (I don't like the "meal" bit in the middle and I tend to think of "ameliorate") and a great improvement on Emily, which has always struck me as dowdy.
Of course, it could also have either Emmie or Millie as nns.
Emilia Lanier is considered by some to have been Shakespeare's "Dark Lady" - so it has an intriguing historical edge.

1. Love it. Emilia combines ancient Rome and Shakespeare in my mind. So many great associations. Beautiful name. Nns: Emmie, Emma, Emily (although I don't think this one is inevitable), Millie, Mimi, Mia, Lia.
2. Yes, it will get confused a lot with Amelia. But it's a risk well worth taking.
3. Emmy and Amy sound similar. But I wouldn't say Emilia and Amy are too close.
4. Mariah and Emilia are a pair of great ladies in the making. How can they not have great self-esteem and great posture with names like these? :-) Lovely.
