How do you (you personally) pronounce this name, Viola, by default? Me= VIE-oh-luh (tonic syllable on VIE).I like it more and more.

VIE-oh-La...I skip over the "oh" for the most part that you barely hear it though.
I LOVE the name though.
Viola is definately a top name for me, the only thing that stops me is the pronunciation thing!! I don't want her being called Vee-ol-uh all the time. That is an instrument, her name would be Shakespearean.

Vie-OH-luhI pronouce it like you do. Vie-OH-luh. Like Violin but a lah instead at the end! :) I love this name. I also prefer it pronounced this way.

"VIE-uh-lah"I know it's supposed to be pronounced like the instrument, but I find this pronunciation much more appealing.

Always pronounced it vie-OH-la. Not my favourite, but I don't hate it. I like it much better pronouced VIE-la, VIE-oh-la, or VEE-oh-la but old habits die hard

vee-oo-la [m]vee-oo-la is the Swedish pronunciation. If I say it in English it's vie-oh-la.

ditto.

I say Vie-o-la and I love it- really love it actually.

I pronounce it the same way you do. I like it but not enough to use it and put up with the constant correcting I think I'd have to do when others pronounced it differently. Too bad because it's very pretty.

"VIE-uh-luh"I love it, but only pronounced the British way, "VIE-uh-luh."

You asked us how we pronounced the name. kookiemonster71 did as you asked. Why are you upset?

I am not upset, just drama-laden.

Ah. Those were the days . . . . :-)

THAT is the only pronunciation I have ever heard. Perhaps it is a regional thing. I don't know. Your pronunciation does sound "somewhat" better, but I thought you wanted to know what responders first instinct was on pronunciation. vie-OH-lah is mine.

I think "VIE-uh-lah" is a Shakespearean thing.

I agreeVie-Oh-lah is always the pronunciation I have heard. Vee-O-lah I think may be incorrect.

I am almost positive in any country where the long i sound is rarely used (Romance languages), Vie-oh-lah is not way it's pronounced.

exactly, in German and Italian it's vee-OH-la

vee-OH-la, it's the correct Italian pronunciation of Viola. I know a girl in her mid 20s with the name. She pronounces it the way I do. She has a sister named Jasmin.

I think it's beautiful for a girl.

I think it's really pretty. I pronounce it VIE-oh-luh too, but I say the oh syllable kind of quick so it almost sounds like VIE-lə. I like that pronunciation much better, and it doesn't make me think strictly of the musical instrument when said that way. Not that there's anything wrong with violas.

Yes, I say the o syllable quickly too, so it is more like VIE-luh. Love that.

vie-O-lahI really like this name.
