I don't think of hillbillies, but I do think of Bart Simpson's chain-smoking aunt.
Imo, it doesn't have a classy vibe, understated or otherwise.

Selma, Alabama
That is what I think of. Civil rights struggles and hate. There was also triumph there, but the negatives associated with this name would most definitely keep me from using it.
I don't really care for the sound of it either.

I love it.
It's been a favorite for a long time, but it does tend to garner a lot of negative attention.

Old-fashioned and yes, I see why they thought of it as a hillbilly name. It just seems awkward and ugly to me; it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I do think it could work, though. I like the ending and beginning, but it doesn't seem to add up well. I just can't shake the association!
I've liked the name Selma ever since I saw the 1945 Edward G. Robinson/Margaret O'Brien movie Our Vines Have Tender Grapes for the first time many years ago. That completely won me over on the name. :)

Selma's wonderful! It's indubitably classy.
I don't think that Selma seems like a hillbilly name, but it has never been a favorite of mine. I tend to like older names, but this one seems too stuffy to me. I don't see it being revived soon.
I think Sela and Selah, both pronounced SEE-la, are much prettier.

I don't think it sounds like a hillbilly name at all.
