Mia
I met the cutest little girl named Mia and the name is growing on me. What do you think? Is it really that common? How many Mias do you know? I know it's high on the list, but because there is only one spelling of MEE-ah (Mia) I thought it might not actually be used as much. Do you think it'll continue to rise?

Ugh. I hate this name. To me, it's not much different than naming your child "my" or "mine." Mia is the #2 most popular name in my state, so I see it everywhere. There may not be many alternate spellings, but Mia is also used a nickname for every little Amelia I know, a couple of the Madelines, and the only baby Mary. :( That adds up to a lot of Mias where I live. It may be more popular than you realize.

Oh no, one of my most hated names. For me it's either My-ah or nothing. Mia just gets on my nerves.

I personally love this name. I know it might have something to do with the fact that this is the name of my best friend but I think I liked it before and having a friend named Mia just made it better. I think the meaning is great too.I also know someone who spells their name this way but it's pronounced MIE-ah.

I don't think Mia is common at all. I don't really hear it much. I can't see it getting popular any time soon. I think it's cute.

http://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/babyname.cgiIt was #15 in the States in '07, but that was actually slightly down from '06. I'll be curious to see where it is in '08. One problem is, though, that people have been spelling it Mya sometimes (I think-- I am never quite sure when it is spelled Mya whether it is pronounced as Mia or Maya!)

That's what I would think.

I guess Mya is pronounced like Maya. It doesn't make much sense to pronounce Mya like Mia, but you never really know...Maybe it's just not common in her area?

I think this is a pretty name-- we were considering it for a while because we wanted something simple and feminine-- but it is rather common and nick-namish.
I think I like it as a nickname for Amelia. Vote on my name list? http://www.babynames.com/namelist/9516801

I hate the name Mia. I find it one of the most annoying names around. It is so insubstantial and cutesy and I generally think of it as a real mumble of a name. Add to the fact that it *is* popular- it brings me to the conclusion of don't use it.I know three little girls named Mia and one girl my age. I prefer the similar Maia or Maya. They have a lot more history and substance and just don't seem as singsongy and cutesy.
