I really like it and I think it works just fine as a full name. It's strong enough to stand alone.
I like it. I didn't like it before my cousin and her husband used it as a middle name for this son, Angus Leo, but it's grown on me since I started hearing it more from them. :-)

I love Leo?
And why would it be nicknamish, Leo is a formal name in itself?
I think of the Russian author Leo Tolstoy (I think the Russian name is Lev, but it always says Leo Tolstoy.
"You sought a flower and found a fruit. You sought a spring and found a sea. You sought a woman and found a soul. You are disappointed."
"It does not become me to make myself smaller than I am." (Edith Södergran 1891-1923)

No. It's not nn-ish to me at all. I'm used to it as a pope's name and it's hard to think of them as informal. Of course the zodiac sign also comes to mind, but I don't associate that with a personal name. (I hope that made sense.)
I really like it as a fn. Have you thought about mns? Leo Thomas sounds nice to me.
