With the popularity of Maxwell, Maximus, Maximillian and Max for a boy, as well as the popularity of feminine forms of popular boys' names such as Alexandra and Alexandria with the nickname Alex, I'm surprised Maxine / nn Max hasn't taken off. EDIT: After reading the comment about the nickname Maxi (maxi pad), I can now see why this name hasn't become more popular for girls. If our daughter was a boy, we would have named her Maxwell (I've since abandoned Maxwell for a future boy due to the popularity and alliteration with our surname). My MIL knew our daughter would have been Maxwell had she been a boy, and was suggesting we name her Maxine so she could be "a little M & M" (our last name begins with M). As much as I love Maxine, I love it for someone else’s child, not my own. I think it would make a great middle name.EDIT Part 2: I wouldn't have gone with Maxine for a girl anyway, but my husband was dead set against it due to the possibility of being called "Maxi pad." I had forgotten all about that unfortunate nickname. I still think Maxine is nice for someone else's child, and would seriously consider Maxine as a middle name if I didn't use an honoring middle name.

First of all, I hate anything with 'max' in it. I have no idea why, other than I just find it a really ugly group of sounds. Additionally, Maxine immediately brings to mind a song by the same name by Sharon O'Neill about a prostitute, a la 'Roxanne' by the Police. Although she's a NZ singer so it's probably not an issue outside of New Zealand. It's just the first association for me.

Love it.It's been on my mind a lot lately. I don't think I would use a nickname, but if I did, it would probably be Max.Maxine Ruby, maybe?

i personally don't like this name. and yeah, it does make me think of cranky maxine from the greeting cards. :) max is cute for a girl's nn, though. but maxi (as in maxi pad) would be HORRIBLE! (and unfortunately, i can totally see that coming in her junior high/high school future.)

ever seen Shoebox greeting cards? Many of them feature a crabby, sour old lady named Maxine. That's what I think of when I see/hear the name. I think it's one of those old-fashioned names that is never going to make a comeback. It's not comeback material.Max is a name for a dog, imo.
